  • THE ARTIST MEDIATOR

My name is Rodion Shub. I am a Ukrainian animation director. Creating the illusion of movement frame by frame is my passion. In my professional animation studio, along with my team, I create animations for advertising, music videos, cinema, and television. But above all, I enjoy when both children and adults fall in love with the world of Stop Motion. When I share the secrets of creating stop motion animation, when I see the light in the participants’ eyes as they bring something inanimate to life, I am the happiest person in the world.

  • THE « JOURNEY INTO THE WORLD OF STOP MOTION, FRAME BY FRAME ANIMATION » WORKSHOPS

I propose Stop Motion animation workshops, where I invite participants to dive into the technological world of animation creation. Together, we explore what stop motion animation is, what distinguishes good animation from bad animation, and of course, we create our own animation. Each workshop is unique and allows us to explore various types of stop motion. We work with clay and paper, create our own characters, and begin animating them. Additionally, we play the roles of actors in animation using the pixilation technique.

Here are some examples of activities :

Example 1 : “Clay Modeling” activity. Children sculpt a figurine of their choice using clay and, in small teams, bring their creations to life (with creative interaction with one another) under my supervision. Together, we watch the result and discuss ways to improve the animation. The main objective is to learn, through practice and creativity, the rules of stop motion animation.

Example 2 : “Pixilation Transformation” activity. During the workshop, children become actors playing characters frame by frame. The actors freeze before each camera shot, then perform a small movement and freeze again for the next shot. This creates incredible movements on the screen that are impossible in real life. Each student invents how to transform themselves using animation tricks (using a cover to make a person invisible, substituting characters between two shots, etc.).

  • READY FOR THE EXPERIENCE ?

Stop motion animation is highly diverse and fosters creativity. Various techniques are used, including clay modeling, cutting, collage, frame by frame play, and subject animation. Are you tempted to develop your creativity, to improvise again and again, and to learn how to implement your creative ideas? At the end of the session, a video showcasing the final result of the workshops will be created and made accessible to the children.

Please note that Le Moulin à Vent is proud to introduce children to stop motion animation with a Ukrainian artist who has dedicated several years in Kyiv to the development of his stop motion animation company (RIDNI Animation). Now, he is sharing his expertise and passion in Quebec and Canada.
